Stump Grinding

Emergency Stump Grind.

Emergency stump grinding in Chelmer and surrounding Brisbane suburbs. Priority-response after storm tree removal or urgent access issues. Honest pricing, fast turnaround.

When a Stump Can't Wait

Most stump jobs happen on a homeowner's schedule. This one doesn't. Emergency stump grinding is for those situations where a tree has come down in a storm, a removal crew has left a fresh stump in the wrong spot, or a stump is blocking vehicle access, a gate swing, or a path that someone needs to use safely right now.

We cover Chelmer and the surrounding suburbs including Indooroopilly, Taringa, Sherwood, Graceville and Corinda. In these older, well-treed streets, it's common for a large poinciana, camphor laurel or fig to drop branches or come down entirely after a southeast Queensland storm. What's left is often a wide, fibrous stump sitting right where you need to walk, park or rebuild.

A standard booking can wait a week. This service is for when it can't.

What the Work Actually Involves

Emergency stump grinding is the same physical process as a standard grind, just moved to the front of the schedule.

We bring a ride-on or walk-behind stump grinder to the site, depending on access. The machine uses a rotating carbide-tipped cutting wheel to reduce the stump to loose chips, working down in passes until we're typically 100 to 300 mm below ground level. That's deep enough to allow turf, garden bed fill or a concrete pour over the top.

Fresh stumps from recently removed trees are often softer than weathered ones, which can make cutting faster. However, they also leave more moisture in the grindings, so the resulting mulch pile is heavier and wetter than usual.

What we do in an emergency job:

  • Assess the stump size and species on arrival
  • Clear any debris around the grinding zone (branches, storm litter, loose soil)
  • Grind to the agreed depth
  • Rake grindings into a pile on site

Grindings removal is a separate cost. See the Mulch Clean and Haul service if you want them taken away.

When You Actually Need This

You probably need emergency grinding if:

  • A tree was removed after a storm and the stump is blocking your driveway or pedestrian gate
  • A vehicle, trailer or skip bin needs to access the yard and the stump is in the way
  • Your insurer or builder has flagged the stump as a site hazard before repair work starts
  • The stump is creating a trip hazard on a path used by children or elderly residents
  • A pool fence, shed or other structure is being installed and the stump sits inside the footprint

Southeast Queensland storm season typically runs November through April. That's when we see the most urgent requests in suburbs like Chelmer, Yeronga and Fairfield, where the older residential lots carry large canopy trees.

Outside storm season, urgent jobs also come up when a property sale or rental inspection is imminent, or when a landscaping crew is booked to start and a stump is in the way.

What It Typically Costs

Emergency stump grinding in Brisbane generally costs more than a standard booking. You're paying for priority scheduling and, often, short-notice mobilisation.

As a rough guide:

  • Small stump (under 300 mm diameter): $250 to $400
  • Medium stump (300 to 600 mm): $400 to $650
  • Large or multi-root stump (over 600 mm): $650 to $1,000+

What pushes the price up:

  • Narrow access (side gates under 900 mm may require a smaller machine or hand tools)
  • Soft or waterlogged ground after rain
  • Hard species like camphor laurel or ironbark
  • Root systems extending under paths or structures (that's a separate Root System Removal job)
  • Same-day or next-morning scheduling

What's typically included in the quote: grinding to agreed depth, site assessment, and raking grindings into a pile. What's not included unless specified: hauling grindings away, backfilling the void with soil or sand, and any path or turf reinstatement.

We give you a clear written quote before work starts. No surprises on the invoice.

Is This the Right Service for Your Property?

Emergency grinding suits you if speed matters more than cost optimisation. If you can wait a week or two, a standard single stump or multi-stump booking will likely be cheaper.

It's worth asking yourself:

  • Is there a genuine access, safety or contractual reason this needs to happen within 24 to 48 hours?
  • Is the stump accessible for a machine, or will it need hand-clearing first?
  • Do you want grindings removed, or are you happy to work them into garden beds or lawn?

If the stump is within a root zone that's close to a footpath, retaining wall or underground pipe, mention that when you call. We may recommend a more careful approach or a partial grind to avoid damaging nearby structures.

A Honest Note on Safety and Insurance

Stump grinding involves fast-moving cutting equipment and flying debris. Any operator working on your property should carry public liability insurance. It's reasonable to ask for confirmation of this before work starts.

We hold public liability cover and operate under ABN 72 918 637 629. We don't grind near live underground services without first understanding what's in the ground. If you're unsure about service locations on your block, call Dial Before You Dig (1100) or check your council records before the grinder arrives.

Quick answers

Frequently asked.

How quickly can you respond to an emergency stump grinding job in Chelmer?
It depends on current bookings and access, but we aim to reach most jobs in the Chelmer and inner-west Brisbane area within 24 to 48 hours of your call. Same-day grinding is sometimes possible. Call us with your suburb and stump size and we'll give you an honest time frame upfront.
Does emergency stump grinding cost more than a standard booking?
Yes, typically. Priority scheduling means we rearrange existing bookings, so there's a premium for urgency. As a rough guide, expect to pay $50 to $150 more than a standard single stump grind. The exact amount depends on stump size, species, access and how quickly you need the work done.
Will you grind a stump that's still wet or waterlogged after a storm?
Generally yes, though wet ground can slow the work and affect access for heavier machinery. We assess conditions on arrival. Soft or saturated soil may mean we use a smaller machine to avoid tearing up your lawn. We'll tell you if conditions make grinding impractical before we start.
Is the mulch and debris removed as part of the emergency service?
Not automatically. Grinding leaves a pile of wood chip grindings on site. Removal and off-site disposal is a separate service (Mulch Clean and Haul). Some homeowners prefer to keep the grindings for garden beds, which saves money. Let us know what you'd prefer when you book and we'll include it in your quote.
Can you grind a stump if access to my yard is very narrow?
Narrow access is common in older Chelmer and Indooroopilly properties. If your side gate is under about 900 mm wide, we typically need to use a smaller walk-behind machine. This is slower but still effective. In some cases with very tight access or obstacles, part of the work may require hand tools. We'll flag this before quoting.
Do I need to do anything to prepare the site before you arrive?
Clear the area of loose branches, garden furniture or anything else sitting directly on or around the stump. If you know where underground services run on your block, let us know. For storm-damaged sites with a lot of debris, we'll do a basic clearance of the grinding zone, but a heavily cluttered site may add to the job time and cost.
